Description The project is located on the Southern Ute Indian Reservation within the San Juan Basin in southwestern Colorado. This basin is rich in fossil fuel resources and has been a source of coal, uranium, and natural gas for many decades. In certain areas of the San Juan Basin, the coal seams emerge from the surface of the ground. Methane naturally absorbed in the coal seeps into the atmosphere at these outcroppings. The project will achieve emission reductions because methane which would otherwise continue to travel up the coal seam to the outcropping and be emitted to the atmosphere will be intercepted. The methane intercepted by the vent wells will be collected, pressurized, treated for hydrogen sulfide, water and CO2 removal and injected into a natural gas transmission pipeline at the site. From there, it will be distributed to end users and combusted. This project prevents methane emissions to the atmosphere and avoids the use of natural gas.
